Eugene R. Wilson Award


Outstanding Business or Foundation in Philanthropy
This award honors a business, corporation or foundation that demonstrates outstanding commitment through financial support and through encouragement of others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and community involvement. Through its consistent philanthropic efforts, the quality of life in Alaskan communities has been substantially improved.  Nominations will be considered based on the responses to the following criteria:

  • *       Evidence of philanthropic support of innovative approaches to solving problems in Alaska. (0-45 points)
  • *       Description of impact of gift support and achievements accomplished through the business, corporation or foundation’s efforts. (0-40 points)
  • *       Evidence of encouragement and motivation given to others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and community involvement. (0-15 points).

Outstanding Small Business in Philanthropy
This award honors an Alaska business with fewer than 100 employees that demonstrates outstanding commitment through financial support and civic involvement.  They encourage and motivate employees and other businesses to participate in philanthropy and community.  Nominations will be considered based on the responses to the following criteria:

  • *       Evidence of significant and wide-spread philanthropic support of non-profits in Alaska through financial, in-kind and volunteer support. (0-45 points)
  • *       Description of the impact of support and achievements accomplished through the business’ philanthropic efforts. (0-35 points)
  • *       Evidence of encouragement and motivation given to employees and others in the small business sector to actively participate in philanthropy and community involvement. (0-20 points)

Outstanding Volunteer in Philanthropy
This award honors an individual or family that demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating groups of donors and volunteers for fundraising projects for the benefit of charitable institutions. The recipient must have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills in coordinating groups of donors and volunteers for major fundraising projects for more than one nonprofit organization.

Nominations will be considered based on the responses to the following criteria:

  • *       Evidence of quality of leadership and organizational ability in fundraising campaigns in Alaska. (0-25 points)
  • *       Description of time, effort and personal financial commitment. (0-25 points)
  • *       Description of fundraising goals achieved by his/her effort. (0-15 points)
  • *       Evidence of success in recruiting and motivating others. (0-20 points)
  • *       Description of participation in various Alaska non-profit organizations. (0-15 points)

Outstanding Individual or Family Philanthropist
This award honors an Alaskan individual or family with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose generosity encourages others to be philanthropic.

Nominations will be considered based on responses to the following criteria:

  • *       Description of participation in and leadership gift support of nonprofit organizations in Alaska. (0-50 points)
  • *       Demonstrated leadership role in encouraging and motivating others to give. (0-30 points)
  • *       Description of strategic, planned approach to giving support to community efforts that reflect personal values. (0-20 points)

Outstanding Youth or Youth Group in Philanthropy
This award recognizes service by an individual or group of young people ages 5-23 who demonstrate outstanding commitment to the community through direct financial support, development of charitable programs, community projects, volunteering and leadership in philanthropy in Alaska.  Nominations will be considered based on the responses to the following criteria:

  • *       Description in detail of what the nominee did, including goals, process, budget (if relevant) and other people involved in the process (adult leaders or adviser, etc.), and of the time, talent and/or treasure the youth gave for the common good and the results that were achieved. (0-40 points)
  • *       Description of the impact the nominee had on the community, including numbers of people involved, financial impact, organizations helped, dollars raised etc. Please include the names and contact information of individuals at the organizations who benefited from the nominee’s work. (0-30 points)
  • *       Long term (1-2 years) impact of the nominee’s work. Will the project(s) be ongoing and has the nominee considered next steps or is working on other projects? (0-20 points)
  • *        Evidence that the project(s) can serve as a prototype for others or is easily replicable in other communities. (0-10 points)

Outstanding Professional in Philanthropy
This award honors an outstanding individual fundraising professional who works directly for a nonprofit, charitable organization in Alaska.  Consultants or other individuals not working directly for a nonprofit are ineligible for this award. Nominees must currently spend a majority of their time on fundraising, and be a current member of AFP Alaska Chapter.  Nominations will be considered based on the responses to the following criteria:

  • *       Description of career achievements, length and tenure of fundraising background, experience and results.  The recipient must have at least 10 years professional fundraising experience. (0-25 points)
  • *       Evidence of quality of leadership that is effective, creative and stimulating, and that the individual acts as a team player. (0-20 points)
  • *       Membership in AFP and evidence that the individual practices and promotes the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice for fundraising professionals.(0-20 points)
  • *       Description of individual’s commitment to continuing professional development, including certification (CFRE or ACFRE, or equivalent certification), conference participation, publication and professional education. (0-15 points)
  • *       Evidence of commitment to fundraising and philanthropy through voluntary service and financial support of nonprofit organizations. (0-20 points)

Eugene R. Wilson Award
The Eugene R. Wilson Award will be presented to an individual who, through their actions and activities have contributed to the development of a philanthropic culture in Alaska.  This award can be given to a professional fundraiser, major/significant donor, funder, nonprofit staff or board member, or any individual deserving of special recognition for her/his significant contribution to philanthropy in Alaska.   Nominations from AFP members and others are welcome with the selection of the award recipient at the sole discretion of the AFP Alaska Chapter Board of Directors. The Eugene R. Wilson Award will be given periodically and is reserved for those deserving this special recognition.
